Love your fucking life (+ free ebook!)
Good morning sweet ones!
I saw this on my Instagram on January 1st, and it spoke to me big time. Being in that vulnerable, dangerously optimistic state us dreamers tend to be in at that time of year, I saved it with the intention to "spread the message of being a fucking life-lover, hells yes!".
Now that's a New Year's resolution I can get on board with!
Well, one week into 2017, and that feverish optimism has been replaced with a big dose of the blahs. January is kind of the worst, isn't it? Right around now is the time when the first dieters are getting really grumpy from carb- and sugar-withdrawal, when the reality has set in how much Christmas actually cost (gulp!), and that spring is still far, far away.
I hear ya.
So, you may not be in the mood to have someone tell you to love your life right now. Maybe in the spring, when it's warmer, when you're a few pounds lighter, and when you can feel excited about life again.
But now? Now is hibernation mode.
Here's the thing: There's a difference between not liking your life, and having a temporary unexciting phase in your life. We all get those. I like to compare life to books or movies (it's all stories, after all), and even our favourite movies usually have some boring bits in them. It's normal. It's okay, young grasshopper.
Even during dull times, we can find lots of little ways to love our lives:
Watching Michelle and Barack Obama being totally in love with each other (who said romance is dead?).
Jenny Lawson having a surreal and fantastic email exchange with the Vampire Brotherhood.
Filming your corgi running in slow motion, with the biggest, goofiest smile on her face.
Realizing that even if you mess up, people don't care. They are all so wrapped up in their own lives, that they may notice your screw-up for a moment, but then they get distracted by the next scandal and what's going on with themselves, and move on. What that means for you is huge: You are free to do whatever the hell you want!
If you have been contemplating to do something that scares the shit out of you, something you've been wanting to do for a long time, but you were worried what other people may think about it - do it now.
Remember that "no one remembers a thing we did". That may sound depressing, but I actually think it's the most liberating thought ever!
I did something that scared me at the end of 2015, and released an ebook of essays about finding your path in life. After I did, I panicked and worried that it wasn't good enough, and proceeded to not tell anyone about it.
Not one of my proudest moments.
After all, if we don't believe in ourselves, how can we expect others to believe in us?
So, here I am, putting it out there.
